Penticton Teacher Investigated for Inappropriate Remarks
10/18/2012
A Penticton teacher should learn by the end of the month if he will face any disciplinary action for alleged homophobic slurs and inappropriate comments he made to students.
According to a citation issued by the BC Teacher Regulation Board Miko McGrady made the comments between December 2009 and June 2010.
Okanagan Skaha Superintendent Wendy Hyer says while she can't comment on McGrady's case she says if the board receives any complaint they investigate it to the fullest.
"Under the regulations we would have to forward our finding to the Teacher Regulation Branch and that is what we have done."
While Hyer says she can't specifically comment on a particular case, she did confirm that the complaints were brought to her attention.
"Yes the allegation has been brought forward and we have investigated and followed up accordingly."
According to the citation which appears on the Teacher Regulation Board website McGrady is alleged to have said numerous comments to students including the following:
1. Miko McGrady told a female student, in class, that the reason he smelled was that he had slept with her mother the night before and had not yet taken a shower.
2. Miko McGrady exposed a student to embarrassment and emotional distress by projecting a picture of a film star in class and commenting that the student had a “crush” on the film star, and leaving the image on screen for several minutes despite the fact that it caused visible upset to the student.
3. Miko McGrady said in class, in response to a comment by an openly gay male student, the words “je deteste les pédéles”, which translates into English as “I hate fags”.
4. Miko McGrady singled out an openly gay male student by referring to him as “flamboyant”.
5. Miko McGrady remarked, in class, that a female student absent from class due to illness might have “morning sickness”.
McGrady was suppose to have his hearing this week but according the the Regulation Board a resolution has been reached.
No further details have been released.
