Vernon Flag Returns From Afghanistan

Local sailor to turn it over to mayor

11/10/2010

Vernon Mayor Wayne Lippert will take possession of a city flag during Remembrance Day ceremonies at the Wesbild Centre on Thursday that has flown at a Canadian Forces base in Afghanistan. It is being returned by seaman Gareth Eley of Vernon who returned from a six months overseas assignment earlier this year. Lippert paid tribute to the sailor and others from the Okanagan still serving in Afghanistan. ``He's not the only one. Vernon's got a rich history of military presence and it's still there,'' Lippert said, a day ahead of the service. Eley served with the 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Regiment in the dangerous southern province of Kandahar, assigned to a provincial reconstruction team.
